Idaho Winter Weather Alert: Up to 12 Inches of Snow Forecast for Sun Valley Region
POCATELLO, IDAHO — The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Central Idaho, in effect from noon Saturday through midnight Sunday, as a powerful early-season storm brings heavy mountain snowfall and gusty winds to the region.
Up to 12 Inches Expected in Higher Elevations
Forecasters say snow will begin this afternoon and continue through Sunday, with 6 to 12 inches possible above 7,000 feet. Communities near 6,000 feet — including Stanley, Ketchum, and Sun Valley — may see 1 to 4 inches of accumulation by Sunday night.
The advisory area includes the Frank Church Wilderness, Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, Sun Valley Region, and Big Lost Highlands/Copper Basin.
“Travel could become difficult, especially on mountain passes,” the National Weather Service cautioned. “Gusts up to 35 mph may reduce visibility and cause isolated tree damage.”
Travel Impacts and Safety Precautions
Drivers are urged to slow down and prepare for slick, snow-covered roads, particularly in higher terrain. Wind gusts may create blowing snow, further reducing visibility. Travelers should monitor updates at 511.idaho.gov for real-time road conditions before heading out.
The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight Sunday, with conditions expected to gradually improve late Sunday night as the storm moves east.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, pack winter gear, and allow extra travel time across mountain routes this weekend.
