Kansas-Missouri Weather Alert: 40 MPH Winds Followed by Widespread Frost Thursday Morning

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — The National Weather Service offices in Topeka, Kansas, and Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, Missouri, have issued multiple weather alerts as a cold front sweeps through the region, bringing gusty winds and freezing temperatures. Strong winds early Wednesday will transition to widespread frost by Thursday morning across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.

Wind Advisory in Effect for Kansas City, Topeka, and Surrounding Areas

A Wind Advisory remains active until 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday, October 29, 2025, with north winds of 20–30 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph expected across Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, St. Joseph, and Emporia. The strong gusts could make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may cause lightweight outdoor objects to blow around. Residents are advised to secure patio furniture, decorations, and trash bins before heading out.

Frost Advisory Follows Overnight as Temperatures Drop Near Freezing

After the winds subside and skies clear, cold air will settle into the region late Wednesday night. A Frost Advisory will take effect from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT Thursday, as temperatures fall to 33–35°F across much of Kansas and Missouri. Meteorologists warn that frost could damage sensitive plants and end the growing season in some rural areas. Homeowners are encouraged to cover or bring in outdoor vegetation and ensure irrigation systems are drained to prevent freezing damage.

Cold Start Thursday, Then Gradual Weekend Warm-Up

Forecasters say Thursday morning’s chill will mark one of the first significant cold snaps of the fall season. However, the cold will be short-lived. Temperatures are expected to rebound by Friday, with milder weather returning for the weekend. Skies will remain mostly clear through Sunday, giving residents a welcome break after the windy and frosty midweek weather.

Officials remind residents to monitor local forecasts and prepare for sudden changes in wind and temperature as autumn weather patterns intensify across the Midwest.
