Gale Watch Issued for New York Harbor: 40-Knot Gusts and 11-Foot Seas Expected Thursday
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — The National Weather Service in New York City has issued a Gale Watch for New York Harbor, the South Shore Bays, and coastal waters from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Montauk Point, New York, in effect from Thursday morning through late Thursday night, October 30, 2025.
Severe Marine Conditions Expected to Develop Thursday
Forecasters warn of east winds between 20 and 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots and waves building to 7–11 feet across coastal waters. The hazardous marine conditions are expected to intensify as a powerful coastal storm system strengthens offshore Thursday morning. The Small Craft Advisory currently in effect through 6 a.m. Thursday will transition to a Gale Watch as conditions worsen throughout the day.
Mariners Strongly Urged to Stay in Port
The National Weather Service is advising boaters, fishermen, and commercial operators to avoid open waters until the gale passes. “These conditions will be dangerous for all vessels, particularly small craft,” officials warned in their latest briefing. The combination of high winds, steep waves, and limited visibility could make navigation nearly impossible at times. Mariners are urged to secure boats and moorings, check emergency equipment, and remain docked until winds ease.
Coastal Storm to Bring Rough Seas and Reduced Visibility
The approaching storm is expected to strengthen rapidly off the Mid-Atlantic coast, driving heavy surf and choppy seas across the region. Coastal flooding is not currently expected, but forecasters say rip currents and nearshore erosion may occur along exposed beaches. Visibility on the water will be reduced due to sea spray and mist generated by the strong onshore winds.
Conditions Improve by Early Friday
Winds are forecast to diminish gradually by early Friday as the storm system tracks eastward into the Atlantic. However, seas will remain elevated through Friday morning before subsiding later in the day. Weather officials continue to monitor the storm’s development and will issue additional advisories if necessary.
