Minnesota Weather Alert: Fall Fire Risk Expands West of I-94 as Gusty Winds and Dry Air Persist
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — A combination of dry air, gusty winds, and low humidity is heightening the risk of wildfires across southern and central Minnesota, extending west of Interstate 94 and into parts of western Wisconsin through Saturday evening.
Low Humidity and Strong Winds Create Dangerous Conditions
The National Weather Service in Chanhassen reports that humidity levels could fall below 30%, with northwest winds gusting up to 28 mph throughout Friday. These conditions are expected to rapidly dry out vegetation, creating an environment where grass and brush fires can spread quickly.
Motorists traveling along I-94 and I-35 are being urged to avoid parking on grassy shoulders, as exhaust heat can easily ignite dry grass.
Gusty Weekend Winds Before Relief Arrives Sunday
Saturday will bring another round of gusty conditions — this time from the southeast, as temperatures climb into the upper 60s. Farmers are advised to monitor visibility during harvest operations as blowing dust and crop debris may reduce visibility on rural roads.
By late Sunday, a cold front will move in, bringing much-needed rain and cooler fall air to help ease the ongoing fire danger.
Safety Precautions and Outdoor Guidelines
Officials are reminding residents to delay outdoor burning, secure yard debris, and ensure campfires are fully extinguished. With strong winds and dry soil conditions, even small embers can lead to uncontrolled fires.
“This kind of setup can turn a spark into a fast-moving fire in minutes,” forecasters warned.
Cooler Pattern Returns Next Week
The start of next week will usher in seasonal October weather across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with scattered showers and highs in the low 60s. Forecasters say the transition will mark a welcome cooldown for pumpkin patches and fall foliage trips leading up to Halloween.
