Two Suspects Arrested After Car Plunges Into Oklahoma River During I-40 Police Chase
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA — Two people are in custody after a high-speed chase through the Oklahoma City area ended dramatically Thursday morning, when their vehicle rolled into the Oklahoma River during the pursuit.
Pursuit Reached Speeds Over 100 MPH
According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted a vehicle parked near Northeast 23rd and Clark in Choctaw. When the deputy ran the car’s tags, the driver sped away, sparking a chase that reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
The pursuit continued westbound, prompting assistance from Oklahoma City police as the suspects reached the area near Interstate 40 and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Authorities say the vehicle stopped at an intersection, and both suspects jumped out and ran on foot. Moments later, the unoccupied car rolled into the Oklahoma River. Emergency crews later recovered the vehicle from the water.
One Suspect Injured After Jumping Off Bridge
Officials said an 18-year-old suspect attempted to escape by jumping off a bridge into the river. He was quickly taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with a back injury.
The second suspect, a 16-year-old boy, was also arrested and was found to have outstanding warrants for his arrest, deputies confirmed.
An ambulance responded to the scene, though it remains unclear if anyone else was injured.
Authorities Continue Investigation
Both suspects are now in custody as investigators review dashcam footage and witness statements from deputies involved in the chase. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said more details will be released once charges are finalized.
Oklahoma City police thanked motorists for their patience during the brief road closures on I-40 as recovery crews removed the vehicle from the water.
Residents with information about the suspects’ prior activities or the vehicle involved are encouraged to contact the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office tip line.
Law enforcement officials say the case highlights the dangers of high-speed pursuits and remind drivers to comply with traffic stops to prevent incidents like this one from ending in tragedy.
