California Weather Alert: Strong Winds Up to 45 MPH Expected Saturday Across Sierra Foothills and Mojave
HANFORD, California — A powerful Pacific storm system moving inland this weekend is expected to bring hazardous winds up to 45 mph across parts of central and southern California, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.
Widespread Gusts Expected Saturday
Forecasters say there is a greater than 90% chance of wind gusts exceeding 40 mph along California Highway 14, U.S. Highway 395, and through Mojave Desert passes during the day Saturday.
The strongest winds are forecast to hit the lee side of the Sierra Nevada, especially in Kern, Inyo, and Mono counties, where blowing dust and sand may reduce visibility and pose risks for high-profile vehicles.
“This will be a typical strong fall wind event with gusts capable of creating difficult travel conditions,” forecasters said. “Drivers of trucks, RVs, and trailers should use extra caution.”
What’s Causing the Gusty Conditions
Meteorologists say the winds will develop as a low-pressure system off the Pacific Northwest coast moves east, tightening the pressure gradient across the western United States.
As the system crosses the Sierra, air funnels through mountain passes and desert corridors, amplifying wind speeds across the southern half of the state.
Travelers and Residents Urged to Prepare
Those traveling along I-5, Highway 58, and U.S. 395 should plan for strong crosswinds and dust-prone stretches, particularly near Tehachapi Pass and the Owens Valley.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, patio furniture, and decorations, as loose objects may be blown around. Power outages and fallen tree branches are also possible in isolated areas.
Conditions Ease Sunday
Winds are expected to gradually weaken by Sunday morning, with calmer weather returning across much of the Central Valley and Sierra foothills. However, cooler air will settle in behind the system, keeping highs in the 60s and low 70s into early next week.
