Flood Watch

Colorado Flood Watch: Up to 3 Inches of Rain Expected in San Juan Mountains This Weekend

PUEBLO, Colorado — A surge of subtropical moisture from the Eastern Pacific is set to bring heavy rainfall and flash flooding risks to parts of southwest Colorado this weekend, prompting a Flood Watch for the Eastern San Juan Mountains, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Heaviest Rain Friday Through Early Sunday

Forecasters expect the most intense rainfall between Friday evening and early Sunday, with 2 to 3 inches possible on the west-facing slopes near Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass.

The Upper Rio Grande Valley could also see localized heavy downpours, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying areas and mountain canyons.

“Motorists and hikers should avoid drainages and steep terrain where flash flooding can occur quickly,” forecasters warned. “Conditions can change rapidly with this type of moisture setup.”

Moist Tropical Air Driving the Pattern

The rainfall is being fueled by a plume of moist tropical air streaming north from the Desert Southwest — remnants of a weakening Pacific hurricane — combining with cooler mountain air over Colorado.

This setup is capable of producing isolated flash floods, particularly near recent burn scars and steep canyon slopes, where runoff occurs rapidly.

Flash Flood Watch in Effect

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning for areas along and east of the Continental Divide. The National Weather Service cautions that additional rainfall totals could exceed 3 inches in isolated spots, leading to potential rockslides or debris flows.

Travelers Urged to Stay Weather-Aware

Those traveling through southern Colorado mountain passes are urged to check updated road conditions and avoid flooded areas. Even shallow water across mountain roads can hide washouts or loose debris.

Outlook for Early Next Week

After the weekend storm exits, forecasters expect drier and cooler weather to return by Monday, with daytime highs in the 50s and 60s and overnight lows in the 30s across the high country.
