Maryland Weather Alert: Coastal Flood Watch Expands as Strong Fall Storm Targets the Chesapeake

BALTIMORE, Maryland — Coastal Maryland is bracing for wet and windy conditions this weekend as October’s first major storm system pushes through the Mid-Atlantic, bringing the potential for tidal flooding and travel disruptions along the Chesapeake Bay.

Flood Watch Expands Across the Bay Region

The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has expanded a Coastal Flood Watch for Anne Arundel County and surrounding shoreline communities, with flooding possible in low-lying areas of the Chesapeake Bay and Tidal Potomac through Saturday night.

Forecasters say the system will strengthen Friday evening and continue into Saturday, producing gusty winds up to 25 mph and periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.

“Rain chances ramp up quickly Saturday morning,” forecasters said. “Embedded thunderstorms could lead to brief but intense downpours in urban and coastal areas.”

Travel and Outdoor Impacts Expected

Drivers are urged to use caution along I-95, I-97, and U.S. 50, where ponding water and poor visibility may cause delays. Those traveling toward Baltimore’s Inner Harbor or Annapolis should plan alternate routes and avoid flooded shoreline roads during high tide cycles.

Boaters and small craft owners are also advised to stay docked, as rough surf and strong gusts could make coastal navigation hazardous through the weekend.

Prepare for Winds and Power Outages

Residents should secure Halloween decorations, outdoor furniture, and electronics, and keep phones and flashlights charged in case of brief power interruptions. Coastal communities could experience minor tidal flooding near inlets and storm drains.

Cooler, Clearer Conditions by Monday

The system is expected to move north by Sunday night, allowing skies to clear gradually across central Maryland. Monday will bring crisp, breezy air and lower humidity, offering classic fall conditions for pumpkin patches, leaf-peeping, and outdoor markets.
