Oklahoma Teacher Dies Two Years After Drinking Margarita Laced With Industrial Cleaner at Local Restaurant
ELGIN, OKLAHOMA — A small Oklahoma community is mourning the loss of Holly Hill, a beloved elementary school teacher and mother of three, who died two years after consuming a margarita allegedly contaminated with industrial cleaner at a local Mexican restaurant.
The incident occurred more than two years ago at Hacienda Las Margaritas, a restaurant in Elgin, where Hill was accidentally served a drink containing industrial-grade degreaser with lye instead of the correct ingredients. According to her family, the chemical caused severe burns and long-term damage to her esophagus, forcing her to battle ongoing medical complications.
“The chemical caused severe damage to her esophagus, and she fought for her health ever since,” Hill’s family said in a statement shared by PPV Tahoe News.
A Long Health Battle Ends in Tragedy
Despite the lasting effects of the 2021 incident, Holly remained determined to live a normal life. Friends and colleagues said she continued to teach and drive a school bus, showing unwavering dedication to her students and the Elgin community.
Her family recalled that she stayed strong through multiple hospitalizations and procedures, always maintaining a positive attitude. But recently, her health took a sharp decline.
According to relatives, Holly became suddenly ill at work and returned home to rest. That evening, she called her mother saying she couldn’t breathe. Despite emergency efforts, she passed away later that night.
Community Grieves the Loss
Elgin Public Schools described Holly as a “bright light” and a “pillar of kindness,” known for her compassion and deep love for children. Parents and colleagues gathered this week to honor her memory with flowers and tributes at the school where she taught.
“She never stopped showing up for her students,” one co-worker said. “Even when she was in pain, she smiled and kept teaching.”
Restaurant Case and Settlement
The civil matter involving the restaurant was settled earlier this year, according to statements from both parties. The Hill family confirmed that a legal settlement was reached with Hacienda Las Margaritas, though details were not made public.
The restaurant has not issued a recent statement following her passing.
Holly Hill is survived by her three children, her husband, and her parents. A candlelight vigil is planned in her honor later this week in Elgin.
